Is there a minimum term on the contract? Often gyms have a minimum term on the length of your contract. A large chunk of a gym's income will come from clients that do not attend but still have to pay the subscription fee. If you're not totally certain you'll be using a gym for the minimum term of the contract, find out if there's a trial period or a subscription that does not have a minimum term. Don't be afraid to walk away and shop around for a gym that does.
